What happened when they tried the work

Real students and graduates, before and after a Joppetizer. Some found their path. Some ruled one out. Both count as a win.

Trying the tasks, and imagining myself as the professional, is what helped me decide.

I tried both the Occupational Therapist and Clinical Psychologist Joppetizers™ two years ago, after finishing my bachelor's. I learned so much more about the two occupations than any internet research or careers talk. Being able to try the tasks and imagine myself as the professional really helped me make the decision. I have now completed year one of my Occupational Therapy training programme, and I am very grateful to BehindTitles for the Joppetizers™.

Figuring this out before university saved me so much time and worry.

I had always thought clinical psychologist would be my dream career, so I eagerly joined last year's Joppetizer. After really immersing myself in the role, I found I did not enjoy conducting consultations, because the results are not seen as easily or directly, and I like a constant sense of accomplishment. Being able to figure out my interest before applying to university has saved me so much time and worry, and let me focus toward a whole new path.

Joppetizers™ really helped me validate my interests and my direction.

Back in my Form 5 summer, I had no clue what to pursue. I had some interest in Chinese Medicine. I am so glad I stumbled upon BehindTitles' Chinese Medicine Practitioner Joppetizers™ and joined. Not only could I talk directly to an experienced practitioner and learn about the industry, I also got to try the hands-on daily tasks of a CMP. Joppetizers™ really helped me validate my interests and my direction. I am very much looking forward to the CMP programme at university.

Vitinie joined all four Joppetizers™ in our Healthcare vertical in a single summer. We sat down with her afterward.

You joined all four Healthcare Joppetizers™ this summer. What motivated you to join every one?

I am a pretty average student at school, and I felt lost about what to pursue. I was hoping to try different careers and see if I could identify a clear goal that would give me some motivation to study hard, and to make a better-informed decision that I would not regret.

Did you always want to get into healthcare? Are you clearer on which occupation you want now?

Yes, I have always wanted to help people and get into healthcare, nursing in particular. I thought it would be great to try different occupations in healthcare and decide if becoming a nurse is right for me. After the Joppetizers™, I am a lot more certain that I want to become a nurse.

Have you tried other career programmes or internships before? How were they different?

Not exactly career programmes, but I did some volunteering and job shadowing in a public hospital. BehindTitles is definitely better because it is more organised. In job shadowing you can only watch, and when you have questions it is not always appropriate to interrupt. Afterward the professionals are really busy, so you feel awkward asking for more. At BehindTitles, the professionals are not in work mode. They take the time to teach you about their jobs in a structured way, and they give you time to ask questions.

What factors go into your career decision-making?

The demand for the profession. Nursing, from what I know from my mom, who is a nurse consultant, and from relatives, is in high demand in Hong Kong. I also wanted to try all the healthcare Joppetizers™ because I know that as a nurse you work with different professionals, such as pharmacists and occupational therapists. It is useful to understand what they do as well.

That is really mature thinking. Your mom is a nurse, so why still join the Nurse Joppetizers™ instead of just asking her?

It is good to ask her theoretical questions, but when it comes to hands-on, practical tasks, it is better to try in a proper, structured way and get feedback from a third party. The value of the curated hands-on tasks is tremendous. It helps us self-select into the right career direction.

I went from a two-time participant to an intern, and grew so much along the way.

I went from a two-time Joppetizer™ participant to an intern at BehindTitles, and I learned so much along the way. The Joppetizers™ opened my eyes and helped me understand what I liked and did not like in different jobs. Then, as an intern, I got to interview an experienced Speech Therapist and work with Kristen to design the Speech Therapist experience for other students, which gave me real satisfaction and growth. The biggest lesson was the attitude towards work: the meticulousness of delivering something great, down to the precision and alignment of every sentence in the materials. It has a lasting impact on how I approach work.

In their words

More voices from the Joppetizers

I have been with BehindTitles for a year now, and it really shaped my career path. From conducting lawyer interviews to gaining deep industry insight, the hands-on approach fed straight into my understanding of my intended career. If you are serious about growth and want to learn from actual practice, not just theory, the Joppetizer™ is your launchpad.

Schools usually focus on pathways: what is possible after exams, what university programmes exist, and how to apply. BehindTitles is about what we actually want to become. The Joppetizer™ experience was a 10 out of 10 for me.

Thank you for the Joppetizer™ experience. It really helped me narrow down my options. After trying it out, I realised the job was not for me, and I am honestly glad I found that out now instead of later.

I found the value of the BehindTitles Joppetizer™ to be far beyond the programme cost. Getting to try true-to-life tasks across different occupations, without any risk to your career and life planning, is something money cannot easily buy. I am really grateful to BehindTitles for making it possible.

It showed me what the life of a doctor really is: what you have to sacrifice, and what to expect as a surgeon.

I always wanted a chance to learn more about the job, but I had zero experience since I go to a traditional school. This was really mind-blowing.
